Queen’s Cross… With Water Balloons!

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Now if you are a regular visitor to our blog than you might remember that we read The Runaway King by Jennifer Nielsen last school year.  It that book they play a game called Queen’s Cross.  We developed an AFFL version of that game and the members liked it so much they asked to bring it back.  I thought about the leftover water balloons from our Falstan Lake challenge and we decided to try Queen’s Cross…. With Water Balloons!

Enjoy the slo-mo and crazy action and don’t ask me about the Spider-Man costume.  We live in a Middle School world and sometimes it’s just better not to ask.

Queen’s Cross… Summer AFFL Style

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Last week I asked for ideas for our next meeting and Kenna proposed we try Queen’s Cross again. I think it is an excellent idea as is the idea that we use water balloons rather than the pig bladder.

So you will need to dress appropriately and most likely have a change of clothes or two.  Make sure you have shoes you can run it, no flip flop things.

Let me know if you have any questions.

See you Wednesday,

The Runaway King Character Challenge

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

This week marked one of our final AFFL meetings (I’m sorry that still makes me giggle…AFFL (awful) meetings) and we celebrated with a student created Runaway King themed activity.  A few meetings ago we brainstormed some ideas of what we could do with The Runaway King by Jennifer Nielsen.  We finalized one creating and playing Queen’s Cross and this our Character Challenge.

In the Character Challenge each member was assigned, secretly, a main character in The Runaway King.  We then had to come up with some way to display the character to the rest of the AFFL members and see if they could guess our character.  It has been many weeks to months since most of us finished that story, so I was mightily impressed with the acting and guessing of our AFFL members.

Check out our videos, broken into two chapters.

It was a lot of fun to think about character and how to get guessing friends to come up with your character’s name.  This is a game you could play with any story.  Pick a book and find some friends and try your own character challenge.

AFFL Plays Queen’s Cross

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Yesterday we here at AFFL had a memorable meeting.  I mean by the end we were all a bit sweaty and winded.  Now, you say, how can a book group get sweaty and winded?  Well let me show you…

Now if you need more AFFL Queen’s Cross action check out these highlights…

We have loved Jennifer Nielsen’s Ascendance Trilogy so far, and really look forward to the final installment.  We have one more activity in the works for The Runaway King.  We are working on a character study game, where members were secretly assigned major characters from The Runaway King and they have to act out and share scenes and props for the rest of us.  Then the audience will have to  work out who they are.  It should be a fun challenge to end our time with this great book.

So now on to the next fantasy adventure.

Any ideas out there?

Hit that comment button and let us know what you think of our AFFL version of Queen’s Cross and what fantasy book we should tackle next.

Runaway King Character Challenge

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

So a member, who shall remain nameless, has prodded and coaxed me to the point of basically saying I am a negligent teacher leader with my failing to update the blog with a new Runaway King game.

So here we go a new game developed by said member with a few hiccups to work out…

Dear Mr. H.,

I decided to come up with the rules for the character challenge as well as the drawings for who will be who. Can you please try and get this information up on the website asap.

AFFL Character Challenge Rules

• Your video that you use to describe your character must be no more than 2 minutes long
• You are not allowed to tell anyone else from AFFL who your character is
• You may use any props that you want
• No saying the characters name
• You have to at least try even if you don’t like the character that you receive
• You should try and have some dialogue if you can
• If you would like you can dress up like your character
• Your video must be AFFL!!! (this is mandatory)

These are all of the rules I could come up with, but if you can think of anymore to add I would be fine with that.
I also went ahead and drew the names from my AFFL bowl and got the following results. I promise that I drew all of these and didn’t choose them at random on my own.

Now these are some fantastic rules and I think this game could be a ton of fun but I do have some questions to pose.

First…. Do all members know their characters.  I have  a list developed by Carley, but if I publish it here they the game is over.  I guess members could choose their own characters and create a video, but we may just get a ton of Sage videos.

Second… This is track out and a perfect time to create videos like this, but what are we going to do when only one person makes a video?  Many of us are going out-of-town and might not have the time to develop an awesome video.  I think members might use this track out time to come up with ideas of what they want to do and start to write a script.  The filming can come later.

Third… What is and AFFL video?  If this is mandatory I think we all need to be on the same page as to what this relates to.

So here we go… an updated blog and a few questions to hammer out before we can really get into the meat of this game.

Start a comment parade to get these questions answered.

Your sorry and slothful leader,

Mr. H

The Runaway King is Coming

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASo it has been a long time since the members of AFFL have been together for a meeting.

With this first meeting of 2013 I thought we would talk about a book I think we are all eagerly awaiting… The Runaway King by Jennifer Nielson.

Last school year we read The False Prince, the first book in Nielson’s Ascendance Trilogy.  We then received an excellent care package from Nielson, right as our school year was coming to a close.  Now we find The Runaway King available for order in a recent Scholastic Book Order.

Today AFFL members, I want you to have a comment conversation dealing with The False Prince and your anticipations for The Runaway King.  What did you love about The False Prince?  What are you looking forward to reading in The Runaway King?  What was your favorite activity we did dealing with The False Prince?  What other news can you find out about the books?  Get that comment section buzzing!

Read and Comment On,
