As we begin The Shadow Throne, or book three in the Ascendance Trilogy, I thought we would look at the different versions of the covers.  Take the following poll and share your thinking.

Wildwood…The Beginning and End?

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

It has been a very long time since we have had a meeting or updated our blog.  I blame that on our long winter break and or recent southern snowocalypse.  Today, though is a big day in AFFL history.  Do you remember when we called ourselves the Super Secret Book Club?  Do you remember this?

Today is the day that Wildwood Imperium is published.  We started this whole club three years ago with the first book in the Wildwood Chronicles and now find ourselves at the end of both the series and our club.

Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis will be at Malaprop’s Books in Asheville on Saturday (we now unfortunately have school that day) and I recently visited Asheville with my family.  So I have a preordered copy waiting at Malaprops for their visit and hopefully early next week I will have a signed copy for my bookshelf.

I know I’m super excited to read the conclusion and I propose that we end our time in AFFL with the conclusions of the False Prince trilogy and Wildwood Imperium.

A poetic and fitting end if you ask me, what are your thoughts?

See you tomorrow.

Sir Tode

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Yesterday we had our final AFFL meeting of 2013, and it ended with a bang.  We are continuing to talk about Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier.  We may have been influenced by Mr. Auxier Yo-Yo skills and just might work on something similar for our next AFFL read.  I would be a little afraid if I were you.

So at yesterday’s meeting we introduced the character Sir Tode.  Because my voice is shot (teacher at the end of the school year) I had some of the members read selections from the chapter that introduced our friend Tode.  I would then stop them at key moments in the introduction and have our AFFL members discuss what he might look like and then once we had a good set of descriptors, we drew our versions of Sir Tode.

Then we read on until the full explanation of the mighty Tode was revealed to us.  Then we giggled and drew him again.  Check out a few of our examples.

Once we were finished with our giggling about Sir Tode we ended our meeting with an ode to Peter asking Sir Tode if he could feel his face to better understand what he looked like.

So Caden was chosen to attempt and discover what he was being handed whilst blindfolded.

So there you have it, check back in the new year to see what kinds of AFFL activities we get up to next.

Peter Nimble Game

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

At our last AFFL meeting we discussed our next read, which will be the magic, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes by Jonathan Auxier.  We read the first few chapters in our meeting and all seemed to be hooked by the way Auxier introduces the main character Peter Nimble.  It was truly awesome and nasty all rolled into one.

Because we had been working on a game from another book, we only had a few minutes left in our meeting, but that was more than enough to watch Mr. Auxier introduce his novel with a very cool yo-yo show and play a quick AFFL game.  The following video shows one AFFL member attempting a Peter Nimble escape from the classroom.

Island of Fire Character Challenge

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Once again, we here at AFFL, have used on of Lisa McMann’s great Unwanteds books to create a book club game.  We tried this another time with The Runaway King by Jennifer Nielsen.  It worked out so well that we wanted to try again.

Please enjoy our character challenge from The Island of Fire.

My 2013 NANAWRIMO Story

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Picture 002Today is December 4, and I have been free from my novel-writing exercise for one full day.  That’s right I didn’t win this time around, I finished on Dec. 2, but I did finish.  The novel I wrote this time around is a sequel to last year’s story.  If you are interested in reading the first draft feel free

It was fun, frustrating, exhilarating and hard work, but I am glad I have done it twice now.  I actually look forward to next year when I get to complete the trilogy.

Here is Adorior…

Feel free to give me feed back in the comments and remember it is still in rough draft form, so please over look typing and grammar errors.

Book Drive

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

As you may know our school is currently running a food drive through the Healthy Living department and many of you are bringing canned food to help local families at Thanksgiving time.

I was thinking about this food drive recently and thought how could we add something to this gift and help make some kids holiday a little richer.  Then it hit me…books.  Not old second hand books, but brand new scholastic books!

I have some points on my Scholastic account and I am going to be picking out some books, with your help of course, to add to the deliveries our PE department with make at the end of the month.

So if you would like to help in this endeavour you are welcome to make an online order at Scholastic Books and use my classroom order code, GKDV8.  I would like to have the order finalized by November 13, so we have ample time to get the books back the the school and off to the PE department.

See you at the next meeting,

Mr. H

NANOWRIMO is coming

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Long time AFFL members will remember one year ago when I announced that I would be participating in nanowrimo this year.  I tried to get a few AFFL members to play along with me, but I think every student attempt withered on the vine.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI, on the other hand, did complete a story and now that we are just mere days away from nanowrimo 2013 I have been quietly revisiting my story from last year in preparation to write the sequel.  I know it’s probably not the best story, it is still just a rough draft remember, but after rereading it I was pulled back into my magic world and found myself really enjoying my writing.  I look forward to jumping back in to the sequel in just 15 days!

I don’t think anyone has really read the entire story, save my 9 year old daughter, so I thought I would put it out there for you to enjoy.  There may be a few, or tons, of grammar errors so bear with me there and let me know what you think.  I am interested to hear if the story makes sense and if you are interested in reading more.

I am attaching the first half of the story and will release the second half when we are closer to November.

Via Gyre Part 1

UPDATE…

I have had a few comments about part one of my story, so for those of you interested here is part two.

Via Gyre Part 2

Enjoy

Anyone else planning of participating in nanowrimo this year?

AFFL’s Island of Fire Silent Alphabet

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

Yesterday at our AFFL meeting we developed a game based on Lisa McMann’s newest Unwanteds book, The Island of Fire.

Here is a little introduction to what we were up to…

Here are the two groups signing their alphabets…

Now we do need your help, as you just saw both groups managed to get the message across the room and correctly transmitted to their team, so we need your help to decide who won the challenge.

The first groups seemed to be very fluid, but most of their letters seemed to be just making the letters with their hands.

Group two had some issues with talking and fluidity, but their alphabet was fairly original.

Who do you think won our Island of Fire Silent Alphabet Challenge?  Hit that comment button and let us know.

Thanks!

The Princesses and the Frogs… AFFL Style

Hello Fantasy Lovers,

We here at AFF have been talking about Adam Gidwitz‘s visit to our local Indie book store, Quail Ridge Books, in October and reading both his stories and some of the original Grimm Brother tales.

This past Wednesday we read a couple of versions of The Frog King.  One had the prince and princess living happily ever after and the other had the princess throwing the frog against the wall.  Can you guess which one AFFL liked better?

Here is one version of the quote we liked so much.

Then she was terribly angry, and took him up and threw him with all her might against the wall. “Now, thou wilt be quiet, odious frog,” said she. But when he fell down he was no frog but a king’s son with beautiful, kind eyes.

The version we read said horrible, not odious, but we still got the gist.

Check out our Frog King videos… We had a lot of fun, and got some aggression out!

Remember Adam Gidwitz will be at Quail Ridge Books on October 16 and Lisa McMann’s new Unwanteds book comes out next Tuesday (Sept. 3)

UPDATE…

So I went to see Adam Gidwitz last night and he was a great speaker.  Those lucky 6th graders over at Daniels Middle got to hear him at school that morning…lucky.  So here is the proof of my visit.
